Main Features

Featuring a steel 2-piece frame and six levelers for added stability, the Schwinn A40 is a very durable elliptical machine. While the listed weight capacity of the machine is 275 pounds, it can support users as heavy as 310 pounds (141 kg). Overall, the machine weighs more than 90 pounds (41 kg), which creates stability. This machine will not wobble or move when you exercise.

It is easier to move this elliptical machine thanks to its front base’s transport rollers. You might need to ask a friend for help moving the machine in a room upstairs, since it is rather heavy. However, once it’s fully assembled it should be easy to move the machine with only one person, if moving the machine does not involve stairs. It is a bulky machine in general. To prevent having to store it in an awkward place, ensure you have enough space before purchasing.

Driven by a belt, the Schwinn A40 has a heavy-duty v-belt connecting the flywheel to the pulley. Designed for a smooth workout, the flywheel has perimeter weighting for high inertia. This elliptical’s drive mechanism is enclosed in durable plastic shrouds that add a highly appealing touch to its overall design.

Electromagnetic brakes (eddy brakes) are included on this elliptical trainer. Therefore, by controlling the pull of the magnet, it is possible to adjust the tension of the brake pad and the machine with the console. As a result, the brake pad does not come in contact with the flywheel, so it is virtually unaffected by wear and tear. To operate the resistance levels of the machine, the eddy brakes must be connected to a power supply. Power is provided by either 4 D-type batteries (not included) or a power adapter (also not included). An adapter suitable for this machine has a 120V 60 Hz input, a 9VDC 0.5 Amp output, and the class is 2 or LPS. Plugging in the adapter is easy.

The machine has eight resistance levels. The first levels of resistance don’t offer any resistance, whereas the last levels can offer a workout of medium intensity.

Stride Length

A maximum stride measurement of 17 1/2 inches (44.5 cm) is possible on the Schwinn A40. As a result, this elliptical trainer can accommodate users between 4’10” (147 cm) and 6′ (182 cm).

While taller users may be able to work out on this machine, they won’t be able to benefit from the maximum stride. The maximum height of the footplate is 17″ (43 cm). If the machine is supposed to be used in a room with a high ceiling, you should add this to your height and a couple of inches more. Each footplate is spaced at six inches (15 cm). The footplates are articulated to help cushion your joints.

Schiwnn a40 Moving and fixed handlebars

Handlebars

Both the mobile and fixed handlebars are present on this elliptical. As the mobile handlebars make a steady curve, they can be gripped from multiple angles for any user. A heart rate monitor is installed on the handlebars, to display the pulse on the console. Users with this feature in particular will be able to keep an eye on their heart rate during workouts and stay within a specified heart rate interval.

Console

The Schwinn A40 elliptical machine features a fairly decent console. You can use it for most things an elliptical trainer would track. A variety of metrics are displayed, including speed, time, calories, distance, results, resistance level, RPM and heart rate. Users can save their favorite workout settings by creating one user profile. The console offers seven built-in exercise programs: 6 profile programs and 1 quick start.

Sound Speakers

There are two speakers embedded in the console of the elliptical, located at the corners of the unit. Since the use of earplugs can be quite annoying during exercises, this feature is actually a good thing to have. You can attach your MP3 player, iPod, smartphone, or tablet to the console unit. It is under the display of the console, right in the middle, where the input for the media device is located.
A media tray is also provided on the console to enable you to watch videos or surf the web while working out using your tablet or smartphone. Unlike many other exercise machines, this one is very useful, enabling you to enjoy your exercise more.

To make sure you never run out of water, the machine’s front main post is outfitted with a bottle or cup holder.

Assembly and Maintenance

Generally speaking, assembling the elliptical is a relatively straightforward process. You will find the tools needed for this part, as well as a user’s manual that will walk you through every step. There is already a drive and braking mechanism installed and sealed inside the machine’s main body and attached to its frontal section.

It is basically just a matter of connecting the two frame pieces, attaching the bases, handlebar posts, handlebars (fixed and mobile), legs, and footplates, and finally adding the console. One hour is the maximum time it should take to complete the operation.

The cable must also be secured to the machine frame if you order an adapter for the console. You want to avoid having your item sectioned by the handlebars or legs.

It is not difficult to maintain this Schwinn elliptical trainer. In terms of maintenance, the most important thing to do is to keep the rails free of dirt or grime, so that the rollers operate smoothly. Be sure to tighten loose parts before working out. It doesn’t require additional lubrication (at least for a long time) because the machine’s interior comes pre-lubricated. Whenever your joints become squeaky, you should apply a silicone-based lubricant. Also, keep the console away from moisture.

Schwinn A40 Elliptical Console

You can see the time, effort, distance, calories, results and heart rate constantly on the LCD console. There’s also a scrolling hills display to show you how hard you’re working at any one time.

Using the hand grips on the stationary handle bars, you can also monitor your heart rate.
Additionally, you’ll notice the console is so simple, you’ll figure out how to use it in just a few seconds. Getting started with it is intuitive and there is no need to read a manual to figure out how to use it.

The Articulating Footpedals

Not everyone knows Schwinn’s ellipticals feature articulating footpedals (which come on the A40, 430, and 470).
As you go through the elliptical path, these supports and follow the motions of your feet and ankles. Having this feature makes a workout more comfortable since it can make it more effective overall.

Lightweight and portable

A40 elliptical machine has wheels on the bottom. As an added bonus, it is lighter than Schwinn’s other ellipticals.
As a result, it is easy to move around – which is great if you have an area for fitness that is small or if it can also serve as an office or living room.

Shorter Stride

Its stride length is quite short at 17.5 inches – much shorter than other Schwinn ellipticals like the 430 or 470, which come with longer 20 inch strides. This may feel jerky to taller people, especially if they pick up their pace.

Limited Warranty

With this trainer, parts and electrical come with a 6-month warranty. Given the price tag, this is not surprising.

In any case, you should be aware of this issue – especially since many reviews for this elliptical complain about the plastic parts breaking after a few years.

In terms of an elliptical trainer that is built to last, plastic parts and a short warranty are not a good combination.

Weight Capacity

Schwinn’s A40 Elliptical excludes tall users due to its short stride, while also excluding fairly large numbers of people due to its weight capacity of 270 lbs. It looks as though Schwinn® is targeting a small or average build individual with their elliptical. It just may not be an elliptical for you if you’re not average.

Quality & Durability

The quality of a Schwinn is indisputable. For over 100 years, the company has been a pioneer in the bicycle industry and is now bringing their innovations to the fitness market. While only 90 lbs, the A40 Elliptical’s large stabilizers and levelers make it extremely strong, despite its light weight. Weighted perimeter flywheels keep the elliptical stationary and provide the smooth motion that you need. Not many negative comments were made by reviewers about the elliptical’s quality. Schwinn’s A40 Elliptical is a well-built elliptical machine at this price range.

Computer Programs

Typical ellipticals would probably provide you with basic workout results through a simple scan function as part of an entry level machine. This elliptical has six preprogrammed workouts which makes it a nice little upgrade. It has pre-programmed resistances in its fun rides, mountain rides, and challenges. With these three settings, you get two workout programs and can also program the elliptical for your own workout. Exercise programs that have already been preprogrammed are great because they have already been designed to burn calories and all you need to do is begin.
